What started out as a dream three years ago came full circle earlier this month when the Lugoff-Elgin Fireants returned from the USSSA Global World Series in Myrtle Beach as the 2013 13U champions.
The team started in 2010 with coaches Chris Branham and Rusty Lynch organizing a team of then 10-year-olds to play in travel league tournaments. By 2012, the Fireants played their way into the USSSA Global World Series.
That experience from a summer ago paid off this time around as a more experienced Fireants team which made its way to the Grand Strand, only to find themselves trailing the Eastside Irish (Ohio) by six runs early in their opening game only for the West Wateree squad to rally for an 8-7 victory. A loss to Diamond Baseball Academy, in pool play, followed before the Fireants went on to beat the Mount Pleasant Olympians to close out pool play as a number five seed.
From there, the Fireants went on a roll, winning out in topping entries from North Carolina, Tennessee as well as from the Palmetto State to claim the tourney crown.
The Fireants closed out their 2012-13 slate of games with a 40-11 record for a coaching staff which grew from to include Davy Cassady and Mark Galloway. Over the course of the fall through summer campaign, the team --- made up of players who are all students at Lugoff-Elgin Middle School --- played their way to seven tournament championships while finishing as runner-up in six other events.
