A special Democratic Party primary will be held Tuesday for three candidates who have filed for the S.C. House District 79 seat which represents portions of Kershaw and Richland counties.

The primary will be held to elect a candidate to replace current Rep. Anton Gunn. Gunn withdrew as the Democratic Party nominee in August after announcing he will accept a position as regional director with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

According to the S.C. State Election Commission, candidates who filed by the Sept. 7 deadline were Todd Wood of Lugoff; Mia Butler of Lake Carolina in Columbia; and Beverly Diane Frierson of Columbia.

If a primary runoff is necessary, it will be held Oct. 5.

The winner of the primary will face Republican challenger Sheri Few of Lugoff in the Nov. 2  general election.

The deadline to register to vote in the general election is Oct. 2.
