The S.C. Highway Patrol (SCHP) issued 726 citations during its recent law enforcement “blitz” in Kershaw County. The SCHP partnered with the Camden and Elgin police departments and Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office in an effort to combat a near tripling in fatal traffic accidents in the county.

The “blitz” ran July 24 through Saturday.

According to SCHP Lance Cpl. Billy Elder, the vast majority of citations -- 426 -- were for speeding. More than 400 of those were for traveling more than 10 miles over the posted speed limit; two for speeding more than 25 miles over the speed limit.

Elder said other citations included 149 seatbelt violations, 10 cases driving under suspension, six alcohol violations, five DUIs and three narcotics violations. He said the SCHP also worked 10 traffic collisions, none of them fatal.

“We also captured one fugitive,” Elder said.

He said there were nine different license checkpoints throughout the county manned by combinations of officers from all four law enforcement agencies.

As of July 31, there have been 11 fatal traffic accidents in Kershaw County. At this time in 2012, there had only been four accidents in the county. There were only 12 such fatal accidents in all of 2012.
