• Misconduct among airport screeners employed by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has risen dramatically during the last three years, including many incidents of theft, groping and other abnormal behavior. Also, some screeners are often late for work or don’t show up at all, delaying the travel process for many passengers. Going through security is trying enough under perfect circumstances and can become nearly unbearable when screeners are unprofessional. The TSA needs to deal with this situation and get rid of the bad apples as soon as possible.

• Wetter, cooler-than-normal weather has been common not only in the South but across many parts of the country this summer. That doesn’t change the fact, however, that there are dire predictions for more than 1,400 coastal cities and towns across the country which are vulnerable to rising sea levels and the flooding it could bring. Scientists are now saying that past emissions have already locked in 4 feet of future sea-level rise, and it will be even worse -- with many cities under water by 2100 -- if corrective action is not taken.

• Major League Baseball finally appears ready to put the foot down on the use of performance-enhancing drugs after not dealing with the situation properly for many years. There’s another word for such behavior -- cheating -- and it’s time for players to know they will suffer the consequences for illegal drug use.

• Several Tea Party candidates are lining up to oppose Sen. Lindsey Graham in the state’s Republican primary for U.S. Senate, including Nancy Mace, the first woman to graduate from The Citadel. They complain that Graham is too willing to compromise with Democrats. We happen to still believe compromise is a good word, though Sen. Harry Reid and Rep. Nancy Pelosi appear not to share that sentiment, as well as many Republicans.
