Less than 10 days after being released by the Carolina Panthers, former Camden High School and Clemson University football standout Thomas Austin was signed by the Indianapolis Colts.
The Colts signed the 6-foot-4, 310-pound center came to a free agent contract last Thursday and brought him into their pre-season camp in Anderson, Ind.
This is the 26-year-old Austin’s fifth NFL franchise since his final game at Clemson University in the 2009 season.
In 2012, Austin was signed by the Panthers after they lost Pro Bowl center Ryan Kalil to his season-ending injury in the middle of the  season after Austin was signed to the Panthers’ practice squad earlier in the year. Austin played in four games at guard and center for Carolina, starting at guard in the season-ending 44-38 win over the New Orleans Saints.
Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Minnesota Vikings in 2010, Austin was released on the final day of cuts by the Vikings. Weeks later, he signed on as a member of the New England Patriots’ practice squad. After being released on the final day of cuts by the Patriots in 2011, Austin was quickly claimed and signed with the Houston Texans for the 2011 season in which he appeared in three games.
He went to camp with the Patriots in 2012 before signing with the Panthers early in the season.
A four-year football latterwinner and a 2005 graduate of Camden High School, Austin was a member of the 2004 South Carolina Shrine Bowl Team following a season in which he garnered All-State laurels. During his years at Camden High, he was also the 2004 AAA state heavyweight wrestling champion as a junior. He was also a member of Jimmy Neal’s 2001 AAA state championship squad as a freshman
After signing with Clemson, Austin would proceed to earn All-ACC and All-America laurels as both a right guard and a center for the Tigers in 2008 and in 2009.
Assigned jersey number 73 by Indianapolis, Austin and the Colts will host the Buffalo Bills in their pre-season opener on Sunday, Aug. 11 at 1:30 p.m.
