An old trick

One of the oldest political tricks in the book is for a candidate to make a statement that goes like this: “I’m running an honorable campaign and I will never repeat the accusations I’ve heard that my opponent is an embezzler.”  There are other variations: “Some refer to my opponent as a rotten scoundrel, but you’ll never hear me say anything like that.”

So the protestations by Republican candidate Nancy Mace, who’s running against Sen. Lindsey Graham in the GOP primary, ring a little hollow. Mace’s Twitter account retweeted a post from a supporter which called Graham a “Nancy boy,” which is a reference to an effeminate man. It’s obviously a thinly cloaked allusion to the many rumors that have abounded for years about Graham’s sexuality. The “retweet” stayed up for 10 minutes before being deleted, and Mace later said it was inappropriate.

Conservatives, some of them on the far right, are lining up to oppose Graham. The senator’s sexual orientation, whatever it might be, doesn’t have any effect on his policies and actions in Washington. We hope his opponents won’t resort to the kind of tactics Mace has advanced.
