• Within a month, Camdenites will no longer have to look at the rotting Maxway building at the corner of Broad and Rutledge streets, as the city plans to tear it down soon. The city purchased the building, which has been vacant for about a decade, earlier this year, and there’s some chance a small park will be built on the site. But even vacant, it will look better without the old building, and everybody will be glad to see it go.

• Republicans in Washington are bashing President Obama for taking excessive and expensive vacation time, but he’s not doing anything other presidents haven’t done. We weren’t too keen on Mrs. Obama’s costly trip to Spain a couple years ago, but the First Couple’s foray to Martha’s Vineyard this week is no big deal. In reality, Obama has spent far less time away from Washington than George W. Bush did while he was in office. Count the GOP grumbling as ordinary political rhetoric.

• Speaking of Obama, the president will welcome to the White House tomorrow one of the great football teams in history -- the 1972 Miami Dolphins. They fashioned the NFL’s only perfect season under the leadership of coach Don Shula, now 83, who will be at the celebration tomorrow along with a host of the team’s players. We’re glad to see them recognized for their super season.

• The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has revised its hurricane forecast for this year, lowering the number of likely storms to between six and nine, with about half of them classified as major storms, packing winds greater than 110 miles per hour. Almost a quarter century after Hurricane Hugo decimated the state, we’re sure South Carolina residents would like to see a down year for storms.
