A stitch in time

Camden woman puts needlework skills to work for church

Row by row, June Seevers’ nimble fingers spun a creation of needlework.

The delicate crocheted piece which features the Lord’s Prayer required 102 hours of handiwork by the Camden woman.  But it was a labor of love.

“I’ve been crocheting since I was a teenager.  I just set aside a few hours a day for it.  It gives me something to do and it’s something I enjoy,” she explained.

The needlework, which she worked on over a period of two months, was mounted and framed and now adorns a wall of the fellowship hall at St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church, of which Seevers is a member….

Family plays big role in United Way kickoff

The United Way of Kershaw County will host a family festival from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church’s family life center to kick off its 1997 campaign.

The kickoff will feature games and activities provided by each of the 25 local programs and agencies funded through gifts to the United Way.

…According to Rengy Marshall, 1997 United Way campaign chairman.  “What we do today with our children will make a difference for tomorrow.…

“The campaign goal that will be announced Monday will set a target for our county that has never before been attempted,” reported United Way Allocations Committee Chairperson Alfred Mae Drakeford.  “For the first time, we are setting a goal based more on our agency needs and requests than on a traditional percentage increase from the previous year’s campaign….    

‘Up Memory Lane’

As Captain Hook, Bill Mullikin has played opposite both Sandy Duncan and Cathy Rigby in Peter Pan. As Cornelius Hackl, he has played opposite such stars as Ginger Rogers and Phyllis Diller in Hello, Dolly!

On Saturday evening, the longtime professional performer will bring his one-man show, Up Memory Lane, to the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County’s Bassett Auditorium. 

…The evening of entertainment at the FAC is provided by Virginia Ann and Tom Mullikin of Camden. Bill Mullikin is Tom Mullikin’s uncle….

KC battens hatches for Hurricane Fran

Local officials were keeping a close eye Thursday on the developing Hurricane Fran in an effort to prevent widespread disturbances should the storm pass through the area.

Authorities stressed that members of the community should take necessary precautions to avoid running afoul of Fran.  Kershaw County emergency Preparedness Director Gary Elliott warned that the hurricane could take a “Hugo-like track through the inland of South Carolina.”…

KC Gamecock Club reschedules barbecue

Nothing spoils a cookout more than a hurricane.  Even Fran, however, could not ruin the Kershaw County Gamecock Club kickoff barbecue.

The event, originally scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 5, was shifted to a new date by Hurricane Fran.  The site for the event, however, remains unchanged.

The barbecue will be held on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at the home of Ozzie and Mary Hudson….

All Gamecock Club members and fans interested in becoming members are encouraged to join in the fun and bring their families along for the evening.

Among the highlights of the event will be a talk by USC assistant athletic director Jeff Barber.  There will also be a drawing for two football game tickets which will be presented to a lucky winner at the time of the barbecue….
