Robert and Dianne McCaskill’s home in Bethune has quickly become a tourist attraction in the small town after lighting their yard for Christmas. The two have been decorating their home for the past 35 years.

“It didn’t start out this big,” Mr. McCaskill said. “We just gradually added more decorations every year.”

Two of the first decorations are two angels on the front porch as well as the star of David, both pictured above.
Since then, Mr. McCaskill has taken on the motto of “if it dosen’t move, put lights on it.”

“I’m waiting for him to wrap me up in lights!” Mrs. McCaskill joked.

While the McCaskills have many decorations, from singing Christmas trees to Santa and sleigh, the couple agreed they are not finished shopping.

“It’s not complete without a life-size manger scene,” Mrs. McCaskill said. “He’s looked everywhere for one, but we haven’t found it yet.”

She said it’s important to remind everyone of the true meaning of Christmas.

“It’s about Jesus Christ,” she said.

The Christmas season also has more than just the traditional meaning to the McCaskills. The two were married 46 years ago on Christmas day.

Mr. McCaskill said he begins working on the decorations in October. He does all the physical work putting up the decorations, while his wife helps direct -- making sure everything is in the right place.

“We do this for everyone,” he said. “This is my Christmas present to the town. We just want to help get everyone into the holiday spirit.”

The McCaskills said anyone is welcome to stop by to see the lights. Their home is located on U.S. 1, near the Bethune Post Office.

“It gladdens my heart when people stop by,” he said. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it to lift the Christmas spirit.”
