Joyce Brown Bennett, age 65, of Baytown, Texas, passed away on Monday, August 26, 2013 at MD Anderson Cancer Center after a long courageous battle with cancer. She was born on June 24, 1948 in Camden, South Carolina to R. Henry and Nettie Leese Ogburn Brown. Joyce grew up in Camden, she attended the Camden area schools and went on to graduate from the University of South Carolina.

On September 27, 1974, she married Dan Bennett of Baytown, TX and moved to Baytown where they lived on and off for many years. During their 39 years of marriage she enjoyed meeting new people and making friends at the many places they lived. She enjoyed living in Santa Barbara, CA and Singapore the most. She worked as a teacher, secretary, purchasing agent, librarian and a home maker. She was active in theater and dance and continuously supported the arts. Her passions included reading, gardening, children and being a mom.

Joyce always had a smile for those she met and a willingness to listen when friends needed to talk. Her 20 year battle with cancer is a testament to her strength and determination. Her courage to keep fighting was an inspiration to all who knew her and those who only knew her from the daily journal updates her loving daughter, JJ posted in Joyce’s Healing Circle of Love on facebook.

Mrs. Bennett is survived by her husband Dan Bennett of Baytown, TX, daughter JJ Bennett Hiltz and husband Patrick and granddaughter Caitlin Grace Connolly of Portland, Oregon; Step-son Steven Bennett of Shanghai, China; sister, Jean Branham and husband Buddy of Eastover, SC, and sister, Jane Rich and nephew Christopher Rich of Columbia, SC. She also leaves behind many friends and family that will truly miss her loving heart and warm spirit. A celebration of Joyce’s life will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 1 PM at St. Mark’s Methodist Church, 3911 N. Main, Baytown, TX. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to St. Mark’s Methodist Church or to a charity of your choice.
