NC PLAYERS ERIN HUMPHRIES (top left), Ambi Wood (top right), Jo Phillips (bottom right) and Madeline Pate (bottom left) celebrate a match win in Sumter on Saturday.

In spite of being one of the smaller schools invited to Saturday’s Sumter Spike-Off volleyball tournament, North Central still managed to knock off its share of larger programs en route to a third-place finish in the 15-team event.
The Lady Knights finished first in pool play as they opened with a pair of 25-14 wins over 4A Sumter. Next came a set of 25-20 victories over Johnsonville. The lone two NC setbacks in pool action were a 25-18, 27-25 loss to 4A Irmo.
In the pool play finale, Andy Johnson’s charges knocked off 3A Orangeburg-Wilkinson, 25-21 and 25-18.
NC faced Sumter, again, in the first round of pool play and dealt the host Lady Gamecocks a 19-25, 25-23 and 15-13 loss. In the quarterfinals, the Lady Knights swept a pair from in-county rival Camden, 28-26 and 25-17, to advance to the semifinals. The road ended there for Johnson and company in a 25-18, 25-17 loss to 4A Rock Hill.
Johnson said it was a long day in Sumter for his girls, whom he said, will use this experience to their advantage down the road.
“We played well at times,” Johnson said, “but we had some lapses of forcing entirely too many unforced errors.  I was proud of the effort that our players played with and hopefully, we can build on the performance as we continue our season.”
NC, L-E ranked in state polls: North Central is ranked fourth in the first South Carolina Volleyball Coaches Association state class AA poll of the season.
In the 4A poll for this week, Lugoff-Elgin sits in the 10th spot.
