• Jerry Sandusky, the Penn State pedophile who was found guilty of molesting many boys who were under his care in various programs, has never admitted guilt despite overwhelming evidence and the unanimous guilty verdict of a jury. His lawyer continues to ask for a new trial for the former coach. Sandusky is serving up to 60 years after losing on 45 counts of child sexual abuse. Behind bars is exactly where he needs to be unless a bombshell of new evidence turns up.

• It’s no secret that college costs have risen at a dizzying pace over the last couple decades, far outpacing the rise in the consumer price index; that has made it more and more difficult for students to attend school without having massive debts upon graduation. Now the pendulum appears to be swinging. A number of schools are dropping tuition costs, one of them being South Carolina’s own Converse College, which will cut tuition next fall from $29,124 to $16,500. The actual decrease there and other places isn’t as dramatic as the numbers indicate because so many kids have been receiving financial aid, but it’s a step in the direction of affordability, and that’s a welcome sign.

• The IRS looks worse and worse as more information comes out about the agency’s flagging of groups it didn’t consider politically correct. A huge majority of those groups espoused conservative political philosophies, and the IRS was apparently looking for “anti-Obama” statements as part of the process of reviewing or harassing these organizations. Tea Party-type groups took the biggest hit.
