A Camden man was killed early Thursday morning after he was struck by a vehicle while walking on U.S. 1 in east Camden.

Kershaw County Coroner Johnny Fellers identified the man as Douglas Lee Medley, 50, of Camden. He said Medley appears to have died from blunt force trauma, but that an autopsy was being performed.

"We are also awaiting toxicology reports," said Fellers.

According to S.C. Highway Patrol (SCHP) Lance Cpl. Judd Jones, Medley was apparently walking in the right-hand southbound lane around 12:30 a.m. Thursday when he was struck and killed by a southbound vehicle.

"We don't know why he was in the roadway," said Jones.

Initially, Jones reported, it appeared the driver of the offending vehicle had driven away from the scene and asked that anyone with information about the crash call CrimeStopppers. Jones later reported that the vehicle -- a 1999 Dodge SUV -- had been located. The driver was identified as Tobias Sanders, 22, of Cassatt.

"The driver was on the scene, but we didn't realize he was involved at first," said Jones, who explained that Sanders did not immediately identify himself as the driver who had struck Medley.

Jones said Sanders would likely not face any charges in connection with Medley's death, but could face a charge of providing false information to law enforcement.

Fellers confirmed that Medley died at the scene.
