• Technology is wonderful, but there are a few things in the world that should remain the way they’ve always been. One is a gondola ride on the canals of Venice, Italy, but it appears that, too, is giving in to modernity. GPS will be introduced, along with an electronic traffic control system. In fairness, there have been severe accidents lately in which gondolas have been hit by larger boats, but this change makes us a bit wistful.

• Out in Mesa, Ariz., elementary school officials asked a police officer not to wear his uniform when dropping his daughter off to school, as some parents were alarmed that their kids were coming home talking about a gun-packing cop. The school issued a mealy-mouthed non-apology after the incident became news. We know our own reaction to this kind of thing; we’ll let you draw your own conclusions.

• People don’t often speak harshly of the dead, but renowned investor Julian Robertson said last week he’d sold all his shares of Apple because the late Steve Jobs, a brilliant innovator, was “a really awful person.” Robertson had read a biography of Jobs, who came up with the ideas for the iPhone and iPad. The biography acknowledges Jobs’ technological brilliance but also spotlights his human frailties.
