‘Equine’ part of marketing equation

Having been involved in the equine activities in Camden since 1952, I read with great interest and disappointment Martin Cahn’s article on the front page of the Sept. 20 Chronicle-Independent entitled “Arnett Muldrow Kickoff.” The article covered a meeting of Camden citizens and the representatives of the marketing company that has been hired by the city to market Camden. I am extremely enthusiastic about the project. It is something Camden has needed for a long time. My disappointment: only once did the words horse, equine or equestrian appear in connection with Camden.

When members of the audience were asked if England’s Prince William and family came to town for a 15-minute visit, what would you want them to see? Not one person suggested the Camden training center where some of the best race horses in the world are prepared to race at all the nation’s top tracks. Or how about the magnificent new horse park where top show horses and other breeds perform? Or perhaps Springdale Race Course, home of the Carolina and Colonial Cup race meetings and where top steeplechase and flat horses train year round? Or perhaps the National Steeplechase Museum, the only museum in America dedicated only to steeplechasing?

I will close by thanking the Chronicle-Independent and, especially, Tom Didato for the great job they do of covering equine activities in Camden. Perhaps more of us should read the sports page!
