Replace recreation office

As a long-time citizen of Kershaw County, I am embarrassed by the condition of our recreation department office. The present condition is one of stained and sagging overhead tiles in the ceiling, years of built-up grime, carpet pieces (replaced due to water damage) which overlap causing a tripping problem, etc. I would not be surprised if there is not also a mold problem. I have spoken to some people who state they do not attend the recreation center because it agitates their breathing. I would question whether or not all the members of county council have visited this center in recent years. The facility’s condition makes it unable to be rented out to the community.

There is a solution. Several schools (Wateree Elementary, Camden Elementary, and Lugoff Elementary) are all being considered for demolition. Any of these sites, rather than demolishing it, might make a replacement for the current recreation facility. The cafeterias could be rented out, there are already existing gyms, parking is available, and the classrooms could be designated as activity rooms that would allow for secure storage of the materials. If the plan is to build new schools in other locations, wouldn’t these old schools be of value to our county as possible sites of a recreation center?

The citizens of this county deserve a better recreation facility. I challenge the county to look at all options for a new facility, including this one suggested.
