The Lugoff Garden Club’s second meeting will be held today at Janet Smith’s home on Willbrook Drive in Lugoff.

Smith became a Master Gardener Volunteer with the Clemson Extension Office in 1990. Since then, she has volunteered over 8,000 hours to Clemson Extension and has given presentations to schools, libraries and garden clubs throughout the Midlands.

Smith was born near London, England, the oldest of four children. She met her husband, Harry, in 1959 in London while he was on leave from the Army, stationed in Germany. He returned to the United States and they wrote to each other for two years.

She came to America in 1961 and the couple was then married. They have two sons and a daughter. Smith became a United States citizen in 1972 and she and her family moved to Lugoff in 1976. Shortly after, her husband retired from the Army. He then taught in Kershaw County schools before completely retiring in 1998.

Smith had a ceramic shop in Lugoff and Camden for approximately six years. She and her husband recently moved from a 1 ½ acre landscaped garden to a smaller house and ½ acre garden. This garden is a blank canvas, with only two trees in it, and Smith is looking forward to designing and planting shrubs and flowers this fall.

Smith has many hobbies. She enjoys sewing, knitting, gardening and teaching children how to sew and knit. She thoroughly enjoys her grandchildren and teaching them the many talents that have been lost in recent year. She and her husband enjoy their new home with their two poodles, Muffin and Charlie, and cockatiel, Joey.

For Janet’s presentation "The Dreaded Weed’s Identification," each member will bring one or more weeds to the meeting for discussion, identification and suggestions on the best methods of elimination.
