Now that the pre-season is over, it is time to crown the true champion of the Fearless Forecast.

Well, at least that is what everyone not named Betsy “It’s In the Bag” Greenway is claiming after Betsy won her 53rd Fearless Forecast crown this season, edging the competition’s most improved prognosticator, Trevor Baratko “Obama,” 97-94, in victories.

It was of little solace to Baratko as the native Ohioan came up just short in his quest to win the competition in just his second year on the job.

“You know,” he said, “as long as we’re still picking games, why doesn’t this count toward the total standings? That’s like telling Auburn or Oregon, ‘Don’t worry about losing your next game. It won’t count against your record.’

“With one more try, I think I could knock Betsy off her throne.”

Upon further review, there is merit to what Trevor is saying. In our bowl extravaganza, he and Betsy disagree on four games. Maybe, the FF home office in Perth Amboy, N.J., may reconsider its stance as to when the ‘Casting season officially ends. Until then, however, Betsy remains queen of the competition, in spite of Trevor’s protest.

“Listen, son,” she told the young squire, “I’ve beaten people older, younger and better than you in this event since the time I circled my first winner. If you think you are going to faze me with your whining, well, it won’t work. I’ve heard this all before. If 13 weeks in the fall weren’t enough for you to take the top spot, 11 days in January won’t magically make you a winner.”
