Finding good in the bad times

Since Labor Day, my mother has been at KershawHealth. At 3 a.m. September 2, I received a call from Morningside Assisted Living that my mother had fallen and possibly broken her hip. I met and followed the ambulance to KershawHealth, so my first interaction in this journey that has lasted six weeks now, was with the KershawHealth EMT who transported her to the KH emergency room. The ER doctor, nurses and support staff were nothing less than incredible. Within minutes we saw that it was not a broken hip as suspected, but rather a stroke in progress. Within an hour, we were on video with specialists at the Medical University of South Carolina who confirmed our thoughts and treatment began immediately. The KH Hospitalist also worked with us very early on in the process, serving her with care and also communicating with us along the way.

My mother’s next week was spent in ICU and, daily, I came into contact with a new group of caring and gifted personnel. The nurses were nothing short of remarkable and caring in their service. In the second week, my mother was transferred to a regular room as recovery and therapy continued. As she was served and assessed by KH therapists, it became apparent that longer rehab was needed. So, for the past four weeks, she has been in Karesh Rehab in another part of KershawHealth’s array of services. Again, the service and quality of the staff, both on a caring/personal level and on a professional/services level, has been outstanding.

If we question whether or not our community needs a local county hospital, let me simply say I know my 90-year-old mom is not a number at KershawHealth; she is one cared-for lady and I so appreciate it. Despite all that my family has gone through over the past six weeks, I am so glad we have a community hospital filled with caring and qualified staff! We have found good in the bad times at KershawHealth. Thank you.
