There will not be any secrets in round three for the North Central volleyball team.
The state’s second-ranked squad in class AA reverted back to its old form on Wednesday in sweeping past visiting Buford, 25-17, 25-23 and 25-21, in the second round of the AA Upper State tournament.
Andy Johnson’s troops will now make the short trip to Kershaw for Monday’s third round pairing against rival Andrew Jackson. The first set of the best-of-five match is slated for a 6 p.m. start.
The winner of the NC at AJ match will advance to next Wednesday’s AA Upper State championship between Crescent and Ninety-Six. Should North Central defeat the Lady Volunteers, it will host the Upper State finale.
After having been given a fight before closing out Indian Land in five sets in Monday’s post-season opener, the Lady Knights (18-2) looked like the team which romped to the Region 3-AA crown.
“We came out focused on performing well and I thought that we played as a team,” Johnson said following the win over the Yellow Jackets. “Hopefully, we can build on this performance as we move forward in the playoffs.
Junior outside hitter Madeline Pate was a force at the net as she drilled 13 kills to go along with eight digs. Junior outside hitter Erin Humphries added nine kills and four digs while junior middle hitter Ambi Wood contributed nine kills, five digs, a pair of blocks and an assist.
Freshman setter Logan Coates handed out 22 assists and recorded as many digs while serving up five aces and coming up with a kill. Senior setter Jo Phillips had 17 digs, three assists and two kills with junior Libero Rachel Robinson having 18 digs and an ace.
