Former Elgin Town Councilman Norman “Bubba” Ernst pled guilty in early October to two counts of criminal domestic violence (CDV) charges filed against him in March of this year. The Chronicle-Independent learned of the plea earlier this week.

Kershaw County Chief Magistrate Judge Roderick M. Todd sentenced Ernst on one of the two counts to 30 days in jail suspended upon completion of 26 weeks of domestic abuse counseling. According to online court records, Todd sentenced Ernst to time served on the second CDV charge.

The Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) arrested Ernst in March in connection with CDV incidents that took place in and out of the Elgin town limits. Ernst’s wife reported to the Elgin Police Department (EPD) that her husband hit her on the head with a flashlight and then assaulted her again the next day. EMS transported Mrs. Ernst to a Columbia hospital due to injuries sustained during the assaults.

EPD Chief Harold Brown contacted the KCSO, which issued the warrants for Ernst’s arrest. The KCSO even went so far as to put out a state-wide “be on the lookout” alert for Ernst. The Mt. Pleasant Police Department located Ernst and arrested him at a gas station in Charleston County and found a pistol grip shotgun in his possession.

Meanwhile, the KCSO found a small quantity of marijuana, ammunition, 30-30 rifle and 12-gauge shotgun in Ernst’s Elgin home. Ernst, who pled guilty to one county of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and possession with intent to distribute cocaine in 2003, is not allowed to have any weapons in his possession.

Back in January of this year, the KCSO also arrested Ernst on malicious injury to personal property charges after he vandalized a gun range operated on his own property, but leased to the operator.

Voters elected Ernst to council in 2011; he resigned following his March arrest. He previously served on council from 1995 to 1999.
