Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is being observed across the country next week, the week before Thanksgiving. The Kershaw County Housing Partnership is sponsoring the following local events in the hope that all citizens will participate in at least one:

• A community-wide Soup and Cornbread Luncheon will be held at Mt. Moriah Soup Kitchen Monday at noon. The soup kitchen is located next door to Mt. Moriah Baptist Church on the corner of Broad and York Streets in Camden. The public is invited to enjoy lunch while learning more about hunger and homelessness in Kershaw County.

• Pack-a-Pick-Up food drive will be held at local grocery stores in the area on Nov. 22-23 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Volunteers from local food pantries and soup kitchens will collect non-perishable items and canned food. (Large cans are appreciated by the soup kitchens.)

• One Night without a Home sleep-out will be held on Nov. 23, beginning at 7 p.m. at the United Way of Kershaw County. Church groups and high school organizations are invited to come and experience sleeping outside in a small tent or cardboard box. Registration is required and chaperones must accompany youth.

•Prayer Breakfast at New Horizons will be held Nov. 20 at 8 a.m. All community members are invited to attend and take part in food and fellowship.

Fred Ogburn of Food for the Soul said that volunteers at both the soup kitchen at Food for the Soul and Mt. Moriah were needed and appreciated. "We can also use volunteers at the local food pantry at Christian Community Ministries and at the emergency shelter." He encouraged all interested volunteers to contact either Marie Sheheen or Donny Supplee at the United Way at 432-0951 for additional information.
