The Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) battles a barn fire Nov. 12 on Guion Drive off Lachicotte Road in Lugoff. A cold front entering the area brought wind gusts of more than 30 mph to the area, threatening to drive the flames against a nearby residence. LFD Battalion 1, Rescue 10 and Engine 10 arrived on the scene to find the large barn heavily involved in fire. The fire also spread to the yard and woods surrounding the home and threatened a neighbor’s detached car garage. LFD crews immediately protected the exposed structures with three attack lines while other crews began extinguishing the large yard fire that was quickly growing in size from the wind. In addition to the barn being a total loss, the LFD reported being unable to save multiple cats -- described as treasured family pets -- that had been trapped inside the barn which they were using as shelter. The cause of the fire is being investigated, but initial findings indicate a space heater started the blaze. Crews from Doby’s Mill, Pine Grove and Blaney fire departments also responded to the blaze.
