Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) deputies charged a Camden man Tuesday with third-degree criminal sexual conduct after turning himself in over accusations he inappropriately touched a 9-year-old girl. In a statement released Wednesday, the KCSO identified the man as Christopher D. Yates, of Lakeshore Drive, Camden. Deputies interviewed him with his attorney present before charging him.

Kershaw County Jim Matthews said the girl’s mother notified the KCSO on Oct. 25 that Yates had been inappropriately touching her daughter on several occasions during the past year. She said she noticed her daughter’s grades had been dropping and that her attitude had changed during that time period. The young girl confided in her mother that Yates had touched her inappropriately on several occasions and sent her texts and messages on Facebook that were “not normal for a 39-year-old man to be sending a 9-year-old girl,” the press release said.

KCSO investigators corroborated the girl’s story through an investigation and a forensic interview. Investigators contacted Yates who advised them to contact his attorney. An interview with Yates and his attorney was conducted Tuesday at KCSO headquarters. Following that interview, investigators placed Yates under arrest. Investigators are also investigating the possibility that Yates engaged in inappropriate conduct with another young girl.

The KCSO took Yates to the Kershaw County Detention Center where he appeared before a magistrate Wednesday afternoon for a bond hearing.

Yates has no criminal record, according to the KCSO. The maximum penalty for third-degree criminal sexual conduct is 10 years in prison.
