Camden native and author Kami Kinard will present a "Create a Character" workshop today from 3:30-4:15 p.m. at Books on Broad, 944 Broad St., in Camden. Writers and readers of all ages are encouraged to participate.

Kinard will also be in the store as a guest bookseller before and after the workshop from 3 until 5 p.m. in support of Indies First. Launched by author Sherman Alexie, Indies First encourages authors to volunteer at their local store, to give back some of the support that independent bookstores have traditionally given to authors.

Indies First

Kinard is a children’s author and teaching artist living in Beaufort. Her first book, The Boy Project: (Notes and Observations of Kara McAllister) was published by Scholastic Press in 2012 and was selected to be part of the Children’s Book 2013 Children’s Choices Reading List.

Her next book, The Boy Problem: (Notes and Predictions by Tabitha Reddy), is scheduled for a May 2014 release by Scholastic Press. Readers can keep up with Kinard on her website or by following her blog at

Of The Boy Project,

Publisher’s Weekly wrote, "Kinard creates a highly credible middle school universe of popular girls, dorky boys, unpredictable teachers and volatile loyalties; she hits all the right notes as Kara learns that first opinions are rarely accurate and that the scientific method does not always apply to human beings."
also encourages authors -- and anybody who wants to sell a book through a website -- to make the indie "buy" button the first among all e-retailer choices on their websites.
