After tallying a season-high 31 points in the Patriots’ 20-point victory over Lees-McRae, Camden native and former Camden High School basketball standout Evrik Gary has been named the Francis Marion University Student-Athlete of the week for the week ending Nov. 25.
The 6-3 guard connected on 10-of-18 field goal attempts, including 7-of-13 three-point shots, and hit 4-of-6 from the foul line. The seven three-pointers were only two shy of the single-game school record. Gary was one of the key cogs in helping the Patriots overcome an early 13-0 deficit, and knock off the Bobcats.
Gary also tallied 21 points, a career-high nine assists, four steals, and four rebounds in Saturday’s narrow, 90-89, loss to North Greenville. He now stands at 1,292 career points, which moved him within three points of tying former Patriot guard John Schantz for 12th place on the FMU all-time list.
A graduate student and multi-time member of the FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honor Roll, Gary is off to a sizzling start in his final year as a Patriot. He is averaging 21.3 points per game, which tops the Peach Belt Conference. Gary is shooting an astounding 65.0 percent from three-point range which ranks fifth in conference. He is also averaging a team-high 6.7 rebounds per game.
As a senior, Gary was a key player in Camden’s 25-2 season in 2008-09 which resulted in Ron McKie’s Bulldogs’ winning the AAA state championship.
Gary was selected to the 2013-14 PBC Pre-Season All-Conference Team.
