American Legion Post 17 to host oratorical contest orientation Sunday

An orientation for potential participants in the James Leroy Belk American Legion Post 17 Annual High School Oratorical Contest will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Post 17’s home on West DeKalb in Camden. Contest officials will discuss the subject to be used for oration and explain contest rules.

Any students in grades nine through twelve, whether enrolled in public, private or home school in Kershaw County, is eligible.

The local winner from Post 17, who participates at the Quadrant contest level on Feb. 16, will be awarded a $500 scholarship. Scholarships of $250 and $125 will be awarded to second and third place winners. Local students who continued to win and represented South Carolina in the National contest in 2006 and 2008 received a total of over $8,000 each in scholarships.

Post 17 will conduct an oration contest practice at 2 p.m. Jan. 5 at the Legion Hall. This gives participants an opportunity to rehearse their prepared oration in a simulated contest environment. Parents and guests may attend. Participation in this rehearsal is mandatory for participation in the local contest.

The local contest will begin at 10 a.m. on Jan. 11 at the Legion Hall. Parents and guests may attend. The winner of the local contest will participate in the February Quadrant contest, the time and location to be announced.

The state contest will be held March 1. The state winner will receive a $2,000scholarship with the guarantee of an additional $1,500 for competing in the first round of the national contest. All state winners are provided travel and lodging for the national contest in Indianapolis.
