Camden Police Department (CPD) Chief Joe Floyd has outlined the following safety tips to aid the police department and the public in maintaining a safe and happy holiday season.

• Be attentive to vehicle activity. Never leave valuables in plain sight in a vehicle. Likewise, ensure that valuables are secured in the trunk or any inner compartments of the vehicle.

If possible, take valuable purchases home after picking them up; when not possible, keep the receipts rather than leaving them in the bag with the purchase.

• Do not shop or travel alone. There is always safety in numbers, so prepare ahead of time by sharing cell phone numbers and arranging meeting places.

If shopping alone, ask store personnel or security for an escort back to the vehicle.

• Avoid visiting ATM machines at night. This includes drive-up machines. Evaluating budget needs and shopping lists at
home the night before can help leave time during a busy day to conduct banking.

• Always park in well-lit areas, even if this means waiting a few minutes for a safe parking place.

• Be alert at all times, walk confidently, make eye contact and be aware of others walking. Do not offer anyone a ride or let them inside of your vehicle. Remain secure and use a phone to call for help on their behalf.

• If travelling out of the area:

Do not stop the delivery of mail or newspapers. Consider having a trusted person collect these items daily.

Plan a familiar travel route before leaving.

Have the vehicle serviced in advance to ensure that it is in good working condition.

Share the travel itinerary with trusted family or friends and notify them of any unexpected changes.

• Finally, report all crime and suspicious activity to law enforcement immediately. This includes suspicious individuals, vehicles, or packages.

The CPD asks the community to remember that it is the eyes and ears of crime prevention and is encouraged to review these tips with friends and family members periodically to keep complacency at bay and the holiday season joyous, fun, and safe.
