• We note with sadness the death of Kershaw County Deputy Sheriff Rob Evans, who collapsed and died as he was directing traffic at Wateree Elementary School; he had served as a school resource officer in Lugoff for seven years and was active in a wide variety of school and community functions. Evans, 50, was well liked and did a good job of establishing rapport between his department and young children.

• We’re glad to see that SCE&G is planning to develop solar energy farms across South Carolina. Of course, the number of megawatts produced will be relatively small in the overall picture, but it is still a step in the right direction. We still chuckle at those who say solar and wind energy can solve this nation’s energy problems, as they will never be able to do that, but every little bit counts.

• One of the great shows of the early television era was “The Honeymooners,” with Jackie Gleason, who was a master of comedy. Just as funny was Art Carney, who played Gleason’s plumber neighbor, Ed Norton. Jean Kane, who portrayed Norton’s wife, Trixie, died last week, the last of the show’s stars to pass away, and with her goes another link to an early medium that transformed the way Americans lived.
