Amanda Harris, a fourth grade teacher at Jackson School, is the 2013-14 Reading Teacher of the Year. The Kershaw County Reading Council named Harris its teacher of the year during its annual recognition program at Pine Tree Hill Elementary School. Each school in the district had the opportunity to nominate a reading teacher of the year who submitted an application to be critiqued by an external judge.

In addition to teaching fourth grade at Jackson, Harris is the team leader and member of the school’s Leader-in-Me Lighthouse Team, Data Team, Literacy-Leadership Team and the Kershaw County School District’s Common Core Implementation Team.

“It is important to implement reading and writing throughout the curriculum, especially in Social Studies and Science,” Harris said. “In our class, students must research various types of texts and media according to their interest level and ability level. The students are involved in reading, writing and researching, and they are in charge of their own learning.”

During the 2011-12 school year, the school district named Harris as first runner-up for its Outstanding First Year Teacher Award.

“Mrs. Harris is an excellent teacher and she always goes the extra mile with all of our students,” Jackson Principal Matia Goodwin said. “(She) makes reading come alive for her students and they are always engaged during reading instruction.”

In addition to Jackson, other Reading Teacher of the Year nominees included:
