Elgin hosts Catfish Stomp this weekend

Elgin Town Council discussed the town’s upcoming December festivities including the Catfish Stomp which got underway Thursday night with the town’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony. Elgin Citizen of the Year Kathy Brown lit the Christmas tree.

The Catfish Stomp, which runs through Sunday, features carnival rides, entertainment and food, including the Stomp’s famous catfish stew.

“This is going to be a fun filled, family event weekend,” Councilwoman Melissa Emmons said about the event.

Elgin’s Catfish Stomp Christmas parade will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. The parade will begin at the corner of U.S. 1 and Bowen Street. Catfish stew and fried catfish will be for sale after the parade.

In other business, council reported that it is working on getting flag poles and flags for Grooms Garden. The Webelos Cub Scouts will host a cleanup day for Grooms Garden on Dec. 14 at 1 p.m.

“They are very excited to be able to take part in this garden … they have taken this on for a year for their community project,” Emmons said.

Council also learned that the town’s website received a total of 689 visits for the month of October and another 595 for November.

“The site is working … I believe that that is paying off for us,” Emmons said about the town’s website.

Christmas lights for 2014 were also discussed. Emmons suggested that next year Elgin budget to purchase additional lights for the town’s Christmas tree.

“That is something I would love to see us do when we work on the budget, put aside a little bit for that purpose. Everything is durable, those items are going to be able to be stored and we can use them year after year,” Emmons said about lights.

The town is also preparing to distribute gifts for Toy Round Up families. Council mentioned that several local businesses had contributed to this year’s Toy Round Up,

Council thanked local business CJs Chop House for catering the town’s Christmas dinner

No new business or complaints were issued from the month of November.
