For the second Saturday in a row, the Lugoff-Elgin Middle School wrestling team took part in a duals event and came home with the trophy.
This time, the Leopards came back from the Long Middle School Duals in Cheraw with five wins which extended their win streak to 43 in a row in dual events. But this one was not all that easy, considering that the tournament format called for 17 rather than the normal 14 weight divisions.
Making the challenge even greater was the fact that Ted Monroe’s troops were without several starters who missed the event due to illness. The L-EMS head coach also said he may have been too liberal with his substitution pattern. “I may have gotten too generous in wrestling my backups,” he said.
The Leopards beat Hartsville, 63-30, Anson (N.C.), 80-24, and Lake City, 78-30, to advance to the semifinals. In that match, L-EMS blistered Buford, 94-18, to meet the tournament hosts. After having thump Long Middle at the Leopard Invitational a week earlier, L-E went out to a 28-point lead with four matches to go. Two pins and two forfeits later, the Leopards survived a 54-50 scare.
“It was a combination of (Long) wrestling well and our not wrestling as well as we could have,” Monroe said. “But it’s like I told their coach after the match, they got a lot better since the first time we wrestled them.Delete - Merge Up"

Four Leopards finished the day unbeaten. That group included Devin Wilson (98 pounds), Jacob Carron (124), Cameron Payne (138) and Grant Wells (146). Finishing with one loss were Tyrese Floyd (80), Seth Wages (86), Elijah Dixon (110), Reddek Kelly (131) and Seth Branham (210).
L-E returns to action Jan. 4  for a Carolina Invitational qualifier at White Knoll.
