The Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) handed out and received special recognitions at its monthly business meeting Dec. 9.

First, the DeWitt Peake Memorial Committee presented a check for $763.50 to the LFD -- the amount raised by a recent memorial ride held in honor of the late Lt. Dewitt Peake. Peake, a long-time firefighter with the Pine Grove Fire Department, died when his motorcycle collided with a vehicle driven by an impaired driver in January. The ride served as a remembrance of his life.

LFD Explorers and staff assisted with the event and received funds from the Memorial Committee. Committee Chairman Chad Porter presented the check with Peake’s wife, Rhonda, in attendance along with her children, Hunter Peake (a current LFD Explorer) and Hailey Peake.

LFD Chief Dennis Ray and Capt. Tammy Hinson accepted the check.

Next, the LFD recognized the retirement of long-time volunteer Division Chief Allen Robinson. Robinson served the LFD and the Lugoff community for 21 years, with a total of 36 years in the fire service. Ray presented Robinson with his issued helmet and a Chief Bugle Trophy. During his retirement speech, Robinson stressed how the fire service is quickly losing the close fellowship and “Brotherhood” that one existed in years past and encouraged all members to find that fellowship once again.

Robinson will now serve as an honorary LFD member. His son, Matt, joined the volunteer ranks of the LFD in January and attended the recognition.

“I feel strongly that senior members like Allen Robinson have paved the way for this department to grow and develop into the professional department that we are today at Lugoff Fire,” Ray said. “We will truly miss his leadership and dedication to the profession but we welcome him into our honorary ranks.”
