Help the Chronicle-Independent solve a mystery! Can you identify this mystery tennis trophy cup, or explain how it ended up more than 2,700 miles away in Yakima, Wash.?

As you can see, the trophy is marked with “The Kirkwood, Camden, S.C.” likely a reference to the Kirkwood Hotel, which opened in 1903 and closed 40 years later in 1943 on west Greene Street. It is further marked as being from “1910” and inscribed with the names “Sallie Hay - Frederika Bush.” Are these the names of a doubles team? Sponsors of a tournament?

The trophy is currently in the hands of Loretta Kisler of Yakima, Wash. Kisler said she and her husband purchased it from an estate sale in nearby Wapato, Wash. The estate, she said, was called the Green Ranch.

“I don’t know if the person passed away or if the house was empty now,” Kisler said. “We collect antiques, (and) this just caught our eye.”

According to WhitePages.com, the names Jack R. and Jacqueline H. Green, and Charles Shaffer, are associated with the address Kisler provided for the estate sale. Jack Green is listed on the Internet as a partner in Green Ranch which appears to be a privately held livestock producer, likely of beef cattle.

Anyone with information about this trophy or how it might have made its way across the country is asked to contact Editor Martin L. Cahn at mcahn@chronicle-independent.com or 432-6157.
