• Yes, we know South Carolina is a strong second-amendment state, and we’re surely aware that this is an election year. But Gov. Nikki Haley’s posting on Facebook of her Christmas gift, a Beretta PX4 Storm pistol, took posturing to an extreme.

• Both Clemson and South Carolina will be playing in prominent bowl games next week, the Gamecocks facing Wisconsin in Orlando’s Capital One Bowl and Clemson taking on Ohio State in Miami’s Orange Bowl. We hope for victories for both teams, which will send them into the off-season with fond memories.

• One of the casualties of 2013 was San Francisco’s Candlestick Park, which played host to the Giants of Major League Baseball and the 49ers of the National Football League. Built in 1960, it has been famed for its swirling winds and difficult conditions. Former receiver Dwight Clark said, “It was a dump. But it was our dump.”  The Beatles performed their last full concert there in 1966, and Pope John Paul II visited in 1987. There will be a suburban stadium for the Giants next year, but the memories of “The Stick” will live on.

• Naysayers in the news media -- imagine that? -- told us over and over that 2013 was going to be a down year for Christmas shopping and that merchants would suffer. But when the tally came in, retail holiday sales were up nearly 4 percent from last year, far outstripping inflation and proving once again that the national pundits were wrong.
