The people of Kershaw County and South Carolina will be the big winners as a result of an agreement that will leave a huge piece of land near Lake Wateree protected from development forever. Sen. Vincent Sheheen deserves a great deal of credit for making the deal happen, as he was the point man, and he says it was the culmination of a years-long dream for him.

Ironically, the deal is also a result of the crashed real estate economy of the last few years, as it involves property that was originally slated for development. Greenwood Communities and Resorts Inc. had purchased the land with intentions for a high-end development. It is on and near Lake Wateree, with part of it in Kershaw County and part in Lancaster County. Greenwood is selling the 3,500-acre tract to The Conservation Fund, a Maryland-based, not-for-profit group, for millions less than it paid for it several years ago, and that group will in turn re-sell it to the state of South Carolina; it will be undeveloped and preserved in perpetuity.

With about 14 miles of lake frontage, the tract is a prime piece of property by anyone's standards. The state will maintain it, managed by the Department of Natural Resources, for use by the public; exact details haven't been announced. But whatever form that takes, it will be a boost to a beautiful piece of property that will remain pristine forever.
