Kershaw County Council District 5 will have a new representative no matter who wins this November’s election. That’s because Councilman Stephen Smoak, 39, who has also served as council’s vice chairman, is not running for reelection.

Smoak said he wanted to break the news now so other potential candidates can decide between now and March whether to file for the position.

“I plan to serve for the next year with the same amount of energy and fervor that I have for the past seven years,” Smoak said. “I simply believe there’s a right time for someone to step aside in the public arena and for someone else to bring a fresh perspective and energy to the office. Now is that time for me.”

Smoak said he will continue his law practice with the Savage, Royall & Sheheen firm after his term ends. He also said he might consider public service again at some point.

“I wouldn’t necessarily rule out public service sometime in the future, but I have no plans right now,” he said.
