The newest members of Bethune’s municipal government are now in place, with a swearing-in ceremony held Thursday at Bethune Town Hall.

Municipal Judge Cody Mitchell administered the oath of office to new Mayor Charles McCoy and recently elected councilmen Don Witham and John Fulmer. Witham served on council previously during the late 1990s.

“We’ve got to have an active council. We have a group of people there now that will be active. We have a way to go,” Witham said. “We have a water tower that needs painting and hydrants that need repair. We’ve got some hefty bills ahead of us. We want to clean up the town and lure more merchants here, but we have some humps to get over first.”

McCoy said he and the new councilmen are ready for their first meeting this week.

“I want to thank everyone for coming out and to congratulate John and Don,” McCoy said after taking the oath. “We’ve got a new mayor now in the town of Bethune and we’re going to see what he and the new council members can do.”

Council meets for the first time this year at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the town’s recreation building.
