After leading the Francis Marion University mens’ basketball team to a dramatic overtime victory over Armstrong Atlantic State, Camden native Evrik Gary has been named the Francis Marion University Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Jan. 5.
It marked the third time which Gary, a graduate student at the Florence school, has won the weekly honor this season.
The 6-3 guard was 6-of-8 from the field, including a 3-of-4 clip from the three-point range, and finished with a game-high 27 points against the Pirates. Gary also pulled down seven rebounds, handed out five assists and picked up two steals.
Gary also tallied 12 points in the Patriots' hard fought loss to GRU Augusta last Thursday. For the week Gary led the team in scoring (19.5 ppg) and rebounding (5.5 rpg) while shooting an astounding .579 from the field.
Gary continues to shine in his final season at FMU. He leads the team in scoring at 20.4 points per game, which ranks second in the Peach Belt Conference, and rebounding at 6.0 rebounds per game. Gary is shooting .513 from the field and .509 from behind the arc, which also stands as second in the PBC.
After the 27-point performance against Armstrong, Gary increased his career point total to 1,435, just 20 points shy of ninth place on the FMU career scoring list.
Earlier this season, Gary poured in a season-high 33 points in a 99-86 loss to North Greenville University.
Gary, FMU’s most valuable player in each of the past two seasons, is a 2009 graduate of Camden High School and was a member of Ron McKie’s 2008-09 AAA state championship squad. As a senior, Gary averaged better than 16 points, four steals and three assists per outing.
An honor roll student at CHS, Gary was selected to play in the 2009 North-South All-Star Game, where he won the three-point shooting competition. He was also a 2009 South Carolina High School League Scholar Athlete Award recipient.
Gary and the rest of the Patriots (4-6) will play a pair of conference road games this week. On Friday night FMU will play at Columbus State University before  traveling to meet Georgia Southwestern State University in a Sunday afternoon contest.
