The woman who has served as Kershaw County’s probate judge for 36 years announced this week she will not seek reelection. Probate Judge Harriett Pierce said it’s time to let someone else take the reins.

“I have loved it. I have enjoyed every minute of it,” she said, “but I’m going to let new blood come in.”

Pierce said she made the announcement now so candidates can file for the job in March. The election will be in November.

“They’ve already had two people announce and I know of one more,” Pierce said, adding she plans to stay active after her term ends. “I’m not just going to sit and remember what was. I’m going to be out there contributing and assisting in any way I can in the community.”

Pierce said she enjoys several activities that will keep her busy.

“I love to garden. I love to sew. I love to spend time with my grandchildren. I have 11,” she said.

Pierce said the probate judge works closely with county residents, often at times of emotional stress.

“I just hope that those who seek the office will keep in mind that it is one of service to the county. I think we’re the judges closest to the people and the only elected judge in the system,” Pierce said. “A lot of people think we just file wills and issue marriage licenses. It’s a lot more than that. Basically, you’re the judge for the people.”
