Keeping warm leads to power outage

As Kershaw County got caught in the grip of some of the coldest temperatures in decades, local authorities have reported few weather-related problems.

Some residents of the northern edge of the county lost electric power for approximately two hours Monday night. Camden Public Works Director Tom Couch said the draw on the power circuits in the Westville area was especially high as customers tried to keep warm.

“The power was out up at the Westville circuit for a couple of hours, from about 8:50 until 11 p.m. There was a lot of load on that line. The outage affected about 300 to 400 customers,” Couch said.

Dennis Ray, public information officer for Kershaw County Emergency Management said the night was uneventful.

“We had no incidents. We made it very good last night,” he said. “We had a few traffic crashes this morning, but that was from normal traffic, not weather related.”

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Columbia said the reported Tuesday morning low at the Kershaw County Wastewater Plant in Lugoff was 11 degrees, but information on the record low at that location was not available.
