Taking the plunge

On Jan. 1, the Miss Lake Wateree Scholarship Organization hosted a Polar Bear Plunge at the Retreat at Colonel Creek on Lake Wateree. Participants plunged into the icy waters of Lake Wateree, competing for prizes such as biggest splash, best costumes and biggest charitable contribution.

Plunges like this are now held throughout the United States to celebrate New Year’s Day and also to raise money for charity.

A long celebrated tradition in Canada, plunges gained popularity in the U.S. in the mid-1990s. They symbolize beginning a new year with a fresh (freezing) start.

The Lake Wateree Polar Bear Plunge was held to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network. Miss Lake Wateree Amanda Bodie and Miss Lake Wateree Teen Delaney Provow also jumped in to support the participants who came out to get a cool, crisp start to 2014.
