DuPont’s plan

May Plant launches experimental waste treatment idea

Waste from the production of fibers at the May Plant may eventually be reused as fertilizer if an experimental project being conducted by Clemson University is successful.

Dr. Carl Lane, a forestry professor, is in charge of a program in which sludge from the plant’s waste disposal system is sprayed on several forest plots on the plant grounds. The final results of the four-year project won’t be in until the end of the year. However, John Ragin, a chemist who works in the environmental affairs, says the indications are encouraging. Seedlings which were fertilized with the sludge showed “significant improvement.”….

High flying romance

The sky’s the limit for this woman when it comes to birthday gifts

Joan Van Schaik of Columbia may just have cornered the market on how to keep the romance in marriage.

When her husband, Doug, has a birthday she really knows how to stage a celebration … she’ll go to any lengths to arrange a surprise event that, she says “he remembers more than a gift -- a moment, a feeling.”

The wind is whipping about 25 miles per house, across the nearly deserted Springdale Racetrack, this Jan. 12. Temperatures are in the mid 40s. The sun beams down and glistens on the hood of a 1956 Armstrong-Siddley and sparkles on an exquisite silver loving cup gently chilling a bottle of champagne on a nearby table.

…Off in the distance, high above the tall pines a tiny speck appears. As it approaches the infield, the whir of the propellers grows louder as the helicopter hovers momentarily and comes to rest where thousands of cars were parked at the Colonial Cup last November.

A strikingly attractive couple -- Joan and Doug Van Schaik -- emerge hand in hand.

Mrs. Van Schaik, with the help of Camdenites Patty Cooper, Jack Brantley and C.C. Canada, had carefully arranged the setting.

…Four years ago, his surprise gift was a hot air balloon ride…

…Will she be able to surpass this year’s event?

Quite possibly.

“I’ve already found out how we can get a submarine for next year.” She said with a gleam in her eye.

Electrifying imagination

Multipurpose lamp invented by Camdenite

It’s a lamp, a make-up mirror, a clock, and an AM-FM radio.

It’s also a two-compartment jewelry case, a cassette player and a cosmetics container. In addition, it has a night light.

Compact and portable, it is covered in soft brown velvet with burned-match trim. The interior is of matching velvet.

What is it?

“I call it the ‘21st Century Ultimate Lamp.’ And it runs on electricity or batteries,” says James Chambers of 1601 Campbell St., creator of this ingenious device.

He has a patent pending on this “one and only” lamp. By the way, the lamp is removable from its place atop the case and the handles on each side cannot be seen readily even though they’re conveniently located for east in carrying it.

When the top is lifted, one sees the lighted make-up mirror and cosmetics compartment. At various places across the front the clock (with alarm), radio and cassette tape player are located, and just below, there are two drawers for jewelry.

…Right now he is waiting to hear from several companies, with an eye for marketing his many-faceted ‘lamp,’ which may soon be available in a variety of colors….
