SCTOBA banquet tickets remain on sale

George Strawbridge Jr. will be the feature speaker at the South Carolina Owners and Breeders Association awards banquet on Saturday, Jan. 25.
The annual dinner will be held at the Robert Mills Courthouse --- the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center --- on Broad Street in Camden.
Cocktails will be served at 6 p.m., in addition to a silent auction, followed by a dinner catered by Aberdeen Catering in Camden, at 7 p.m. Tickets for the evening’s festivities are $65 per person and $115 per couple.
Strawbridge, owner of Augustin Stables, served as president of the National Steeplechase Association from 1988-90 and again, from 1999-2003. He was chairman of the NSA in 1991 and 1992 and chairman emeritus from 2003-06.
Augustin Stables is the winningest owner in the history of the NSA with its jumpers having earned more than $9 million. Augustin Stables has also been the leading owner on the circuit a record 23 times.
A former rider in timber, brush and amateur events in this country and in Ireland until 1985, Strawbridge’s renowned stable has produced three Eclipse Award winning steeplechasers --- Café Prince (1977 and 1987) and Pompeyo (2001) --- and two Eclipse Award winners on the flat in 2008 Champion Turf Mare Forever Together and 2009 Champion Female Sprinter Informed Decision.
In addition, the Augustin-owned Selkirk, the champion miler in England in 1991 and 1992; Lucarno, who in 2007 was the only American-owned horse to win the Ladbroke St. Leger in the history of the race and, Rainbow View, the Outstanding Champion 2-year-old filly in Europe in 2008.
Strawbridge is a member of the Jockey Club of America, the Jockey Club of Canada and the Jockey Club of England. He is also a member of the National Steeplechase Museum Board of Directors.
A noted philanthropist and sportsman, Strawbridge was a majority owner of the Tampa Bay Rowdies soccer franchise in the North American Soccer League from 1974 through 1983. He was also and active shareholder and director of the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres franchise and is a member of the Buffalo Sabres Hall of Fame.
