The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees recently accepted a $1,600 donation from George Gibson, owner and manager of the Fitness Zone in Lugoff. The money comes from proceeds earned during the sixth annual Jingle Bell Run sponsored by Fitness Zone in December.

Each year, the 5K run/walk race is held on the first Saturday morning in December, beginning at 8 a.m. and proceeding through the streets of Lugoff. Fitness Zone donates the profits from the race to Kershaw County schools each year to help foster health and physical education for the county’s youths.

Schools are notified and given the opportunity to apply for the funds about two months prior to the race. This year, Fitness Zone received six applications for funds. Gibson said he is proud of the fact that Fitness Zone was “able to support the needs of all of the six schools applying for funds.”

The schools receiving funds this year were:

•Doby's Mill Elementary School,

•Lugoff Elgin Middle School,

•Camden Elementary School,

•Pine Tree Hill Elementary School,

•Midway Elementary School and

•Lugoff  Elementary School

In addition to Fitness Zone, major sponsors include Upchurch and Jowers Insurance Agency, Sentinel Health Partners, South Carolina ENT Allergy and Sleep Medicine, Bojangles, The UPS store, KershawHealth, Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina, Mid Carolina Credit Union and Morningside Assisted Living.

“George Gibson is a tremendous advocate for our schools, our teachers, and our kids,” Kershaw County School District Superintendant Dr. Frank Morgan said. “His work with the Jingle Bell run is just another example of his sincere interest in our young people and the professionals that work with them.”

This year’s Jingle Bell 5k/Walk is scheduled for Saturday December 6, 2014. Registration and sponsor opportunities for the race will be available at or by calling the Fitness Zone at 438-3811.
