Ranked teams come to county Friday

JOSH SUMPTER SCORED 21 points in Camden’s win at Lower Richland.

Josh Sumpter poured in a season-best 21 points while Delton Bradford added 18 as Camden upended host Lower Richland in overtime, 65-61, in a Tuesday night game played in The Diamond Mine in Hopkins.
The win gave the Bulldogs a 3-3 record after the first round of play in Region 4-AAA. The hosts Diamond Hornets fell to 3-2 in conference action with the loss.
Camden held a 16-11 lead after the first quarter and was on top, 23-20, at halftime. The host Diamond Hornets knotted things at 37 heading into a final quarter in which each side scored 18 points to send the contest into overtime after a 55-55 stalemate.
In addition to Camden’s top two scorers, D.J. Wilson and Alexx Cooke added nine and seven points, respectively, for Ron McKie’s squad.
LR powers past Lady Bulldogs: The second-ranked Lower Richland girls handed visiting Camden a 66-24 setback on Tuesday night in Hopkins.
Natalie Jeffcoat’s Lady Bulldogs fell to 2-3 in Region 4-AAA while LR stayed unbeaten atop the circuit with a 5-0 mark following the victory.
Camden had a trio of players --- Sharneece Gary, Kentrell Salmond and Nikki Lee --- lead the scoring with six points each.
Columbia sweeps past Knights: The North Central boys fell to 1-3 in Region 3-AA play following Tuesday’s 63-44 loss to host Columbia.
Columbia grabbed a 20-11 first quarter lead and led, 33-22, at halftime and 51-36 after three quarters.
Senior center Kawan Hough led Andy Johnson’s visitors with 11 points and 13 rebounds while junior forward William Jenkins added 10. Senior forward Banyon Sullivan contributed nine points and 10 rebounds.
In the girls’ contest, fourth-ranked Columbia downed the Lady Knights with Taylor Robinson’s four points leading the way for North Central.
Ranked visitors invading Kershaw County tonight: Kershaw County basketball fans will have their pick of games to attend this evening with all three county schools hosting state-ranked foes.
In Camden, the Bulldogs will seek to improve their state playoff stock when ninth-ranked A.C. Flora comes to the Dog Pound. The girls’ game tips things off at 6 p.m.
At Lugoff-Elgin, the Demons and Lady Demons play the middle game of a five-contest homestand when Irmo invades the Demons Den for a 6 p.m. doubleheader. Both the visiting Yellow Jackets’ boys and girls’ teams are ranked third in the latest 4A state poll.
North Central welcomes Fairfield Central for a pair inside The Castle at 6 p.m. The opener has the fifth-ranked Lady Griffins taking on NC with the boys contest to follow.
