• People here in Kershaw County are getting a bit tired of the cold weather, and with good reason. While South Carolina has a mild climate and certainly doesn’t experience the extreme cold of New England and the Midwest, it’s been much colder than normal this year, and those days when the temps don’t rise out of the 30s or 40s have become too common. We find ourselves longing for the blooming of azaleas, and we imagine we’re not alone in that.

• Gamecock fans are no doubt pleased to hear that coach Steve Spurrier has no plans to retire soon. Spurrier, who’s guided the team to unprecedented heights, will be 70 next year, but he looks many years younger and doesn’t appear to be slowing down. Spurrier says he works out regularly and feels good. The old ball coach probably has several seasons left in him, and USC fans can rejoice at that.

• We noted last week that there’s less trust among people in the United States, and now comes a poll indicating that Americans believe there’s much less respect in schools today than there used to be. Fewer people believe parents and students respect teachers, or that teachers respect parents and students. It’s a sign of the times, but not a good one.

• Those who doubt that big businesses can be nimble enough to turn on a dime need look no further than Netflix, which was written off by some analysts a couple years ago when the company lost a huge percentage of its subscribers following a price increase. Netflix re-invented itself quickly with its streaming video business and acclaimed original content, and is now flying high.

• It’s difficult to work up much sympathy for Major League Baseball superstar Alex Rodriguez, who’s now suing the players’ union in conjunction with his year-long suspension for using steroids. Fans are fed up with players juicing, and Rodriguez is no exception.
