Phyllis Jeanette Watkins Thomas, 72, of Morehead City, died Friday, January 31, 2014, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, March 1, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church, 920 Salter Path Road, Salter Path.

Mrs. Thomas was born on September 28, 1941 in Camden, SC, to Ernest and Corrie Watkins. She married The Rev. L. Everett Thomas on August 25, 1963 in Camden, SC. Phyllis received a degree in psychology from Winthrop University, Rock Hill, SC, where she graduated with honors.

Phyllis worked as a Hospice Bereavement Coordinator in Lincolnton for many years. She was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Lincolnton, and later a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Asheboro. When she and Everett moved to Carteret County, she became a member of St. Francis by-the Sea Episcopal Church, where Everett was a rector.

She is survived by her husband, Rev. L. Everett Thomas, PhD, of Morehead City; a daughter, Robin Thomas Lingle of Morehead City; son, Len Thomas and wife, Eva House, of Oak Island; four grandchildren, Andrew Lingle, Shannon Jeanette Lingle, Samuel Lingle, and Emma Jeanette Thomas; sister, Virginia Gregory of Camden, SC.

Her parents preceded her in death.

The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church for the construction of a Franciscan Votive Candle Stand sacred to her memory, P.O. Box 7, Salter Path 28575.
