The Piggly Wiggly of Lugoff will be closing its doors Jan. 16.

“The store just hasn’t been profitable for the last year or so,” owner Ricky McLeod said Thursday.

McLeod said he discussed remodeling the store with the owner of the building, as well as considered building a new store in Lugoff at a different location.

“We just couldn’t make it work,” he said. “Those options weren’t feasible.”

Piggly Wiggly in Lugoff has employed 35 to 40 full- and part-time workers, who were told Monday about the store closing.

Because McLeod owns 11 other Piggly Wigglys in the area, he said he is trying to place as many workers at other stores as possible.

“We’ve explored every option I could think of, looked at all angles of this, and we can’t save it,” he said.

The Lugoff Piggly Wiggly has served Kershaw County since the 1980s, McLeod said, and he’s extremely sad to see it go.

He also said he would like to thank all Piggly Wiggly customers for their continued support over the years.
