Due to last week’s snowstorm, the Kershaw County high school basketball regular season will end this evening with a trio of doubleheaders from games which were postponed last week.
The most important of the contests will be played tonight at 6 p.m. at Camden High School as the Bulldogs host Lower Richland on the Michael G. Culp Court for Senior Night.
The Lady Bulldogs will open the evening hosting the second-ranked LR girls. The nightcap will decide which boys team finishes third in Region 4-AAA. The host Bulldogs enter the game with a 7-4 record in conference play while the Diamond Hornets carried a 6-4 league mark into Saturday’s make-up contest with River Bluff. Camden defeated LR earlier this season, 65-61.
The third-place finisher from 4-AAA will head to meet Chapman, the Region 3 runner-up, in Thursday’s state tournament opening round contest. The fourth-place finisher in Region 4 will travel to take on Region 3 champion Chester in Thursday’s AAA opener.
Both Lugoff-Elgin and North Central will be on the road for their respective season finales which will be played tonight. L-E will be at Irmo while North Central travels to Fairfield Central. Both doubleheaders tip off with the girls’ contest at 6 p.m.
Camden Baseball Jamboree pushed back to Saturday: Last week’s snow and ice storm also forced the postponement of the Camden Baseball Jamboree due to wet grounds.
The series of three-inning mini-games will now be played on Saturday, February 22 at American Legion Park in Camden, albeit with a new slate of games.
Due to prior commitments, Laurence Manning Academy, Ridge View, Dreher and Chesterfield will be unable to play this Saturday. That led Camden High head baseball coach Denny Beckley to call coaches from several other schools to see if they would be interested in coming to Camden for the pre-season event.
Last Friday, Beckley said he had at least one team which was interested in joining Hartsville, Fairfield Central, Crestwood, Richland Northeast, Lugoff-Elgin and Camden in the jamboree. He said he hopes to have a revised schedule in place by mid-week.
The Chronicle-Independent will include the complete list of participating teams and starting times for each mini-game when the list is confirmed.
Camden to host AAA Upper State wrestling finals this weekend: For the second time in as many years, Camden High School will host the AAA Upper State Individual Wrestling Championships.
The tournament hosts and their state qualifiers will be part of the event.
The two-day event will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21 inside the Dog Pound with first round matches.  At 7 p.m., the quarterfinals are scheduled to begin.
Wrestling will resume on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with the consolation matches. The second round consolation matches are slated to take to the mat at 9:30 a.m. with the semifinals slated to kick off at 10:30 a.m. Tournament organizers hope to start the finals at 2 p.m.
Admission is $6 per day.
Lugoff-Elgin will head to the 4A Upper State Individual Wrestling Championships to be held on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21-22 at Laurens High School. North Central will travel to the AA Upper State Individual Wrestling Championships to be held on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21-22 at Liberty High School.
